LBSU 302 Week 1 Post

Welcome fellow researchers:

My name is Lewis Thompson and I am on my second session here at Brandman University. I am currently majoring in Psychology, and am planning to return to get my Masters in Social Work after completion of my BA. As of now I'm on track to graduate in August, 2015 and then plan to start my Master's program. My desire is to eventually provide counseling to those that have substance abuse issues, and particularly in the area of methamphetamine abuse. I believe that methamphetamine is one of the more dangerous drugs and it is highly addictive. I have personal experience with the addictive power of this drug, and also the devastating effects it has on a person's life. With that being said, it would be a joy to be able to help those that are under the destructive power of dangerous substances. The only drawback to this desire is that you can't help someone unless they want it, and most people who receive counseling for substance abuse are court ordered. This generally presents challenges on the part of the counselor to supply adequate help to those in need.

I am excited to start the journey through LBSU 302 with everyone and would like to pursue some research in the area of drug counseling, and specifically the methods that are used today that furnish the best results. My research will explore what typically those with addictive personalities respond to best, and I will incorporate what behavioral patterns are normal from a psychological perspective. Of course, this is a broad topic right now, but with further information on how to research appropriately I am sure I will be able to shorten the scope of this topic. The areas of research that I feel that will be most beneficial to me are how to strategically access pertinent research information on the web. Generally, when I look for specific information on the web I come up with information that I don't want and can't find the information I need. Learning the appropriate techniques that allow me to find information in databases using keywords will be helpful too. As it always is frustrating to find the information I want without having to spend quite a long time searching. I am comfortable with both MLA and APA format so that is a plus. But there are certain skills that I lack I will hopefully learn through this research class.

  1. Hi Lewis! Your major and what you want to do after graduating is so awesome. I also am going for my bachelors in psychology, this is my first quarter at brandman and I am on track for graduating in 2015 as well. I am thinking of going for my masters in marriage and family therapy. When I think of helping people in their relationships and families it brings me some joy so I understand how you feel about helping those with substance abuse problems. That would be pretty difficult to counsel those people especially if it against their will but I think if you can communicate to them really well and get them to trust you it will be a lot easier after that. I wish you the best of luck on your journey this quarter and through both your bachelors and masters programs!
