Thompson's Week 3 Blog

Hello all,

This week we were instructed to research for a book on our research topic, and I believe it's getting a little bit easier every time I look for new information. Not that I'm at all getting real proficient at the research process, but it seems I'm starting to pick up on a few little tricks that are helping to find information not such a frustrating process.  My research this week led me to several interesting books on the topic of substance abuse counseling and the clinical aspect of that topic, and after conducting my search I decided on the book entitled "Supervision in Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling" by David J. Powell.  Although this was not at all the kind of information I was looking for this e-book caught my interest because it shed some light on the side of professional counseling that had completely slipped my mind.  This book actually had extensive information on what is expected of those who are counseling those for drug dependence. The book was quite informative when it came to leadership qualities, ethical and legal issues, appropriate engagement into the sensitive lives of clients, and what supervisors expect of drug and alcohol counselors.  Through this information I caught a glimpse into the side of counseling that had slipped my mind.  The relationship between counselor and client.  Now that I have thought about this concept I believe that the relationship is just as important as the therapy. You can't help those who don't feel comfortable or who do not trust you.  The strategy that was particularly helpful this week in locating books was the e-book collection in the Leatherby Library.  The advanced keyword search is where I found my relevant information.  I had relatively little luck with Google Scholar or the Google book website.  They were very frustrating and difficult for me to navigate.  As I continue my research on substance abuse counseling I will try to find cognitive methods used to treat addiction, and the most effective methods used. Then I will hopefully be ready to come up with an interesting research question.

  1. Hi there: I also feel that the more we search for documents or books on the Leatherby Library the easier it gets. There is tricks to it that I did not know before like searching for things by inputting one subject and start your search that way. I like your topic as well. I currently deal with a lot of people who are dealing with drug addiction. One of the big programs I deal with is PC 1210 aka Prop 36. Most of these defendants violate their probation but they are trying. Some of them need more than PC1210. You have a very interesting topic. Good luck with your search!
